How I got the internship

How I applied

I was scrolling LinkedIn, and saw a design internship from Relevel by Unacademy.” by Unacademy” was the first thing that caught my attention, now see honestly speaking we all know that Unacademy is a big company, so there was no brainier, I wanted to apply for this job seriously because of it’s the link to Unacademy and also because it was a new startup.

I applied for the internship through my LinkedIn.

Assignment

Now from here, the situation becomes a bit serious. I got an assignment! I didn’t know before that any company will send me assignments because all the previous companies I applied they rejected my application.

Now that I got my assignments, I got started on them, because I don’t want to lose any chance, to show my design skills.

Hurray! I completed my assignments and emailed them.

After two days I received an email invitation about an interview!

Interview

For me, this interview was more than just “I gave an interview”. It was a big achievement because for the first time someone believed in my skills and checked whether I’m capable or not. In short, we had a conversation for minutes, and in the end, I got hired!

Learnings

Work culture

Working with a team was a big challenge for me because of the teamwork. In a company, one team is linked with another team, like my team (design team) needs to deliver assets to the product team and then they will hand off to the engineering team.

Iterative — because many teams members had their perception of judging they all give different feedback and in the end, it becomes a big iterative chain.

Communication

As simple as it’s sounds, the more difficult it was for me. I never in my life, communicated the way, like asking for assets, direction, meetings, giving updates, discussion, brainstorming, it was all new for me. it’s a skill I’m still learning, and no doubt it’s the most important skill you need if you going to work for a company or with a team.

Understanding briefs

I believe this is the most important skill I learned. in the real world, everything you see had evolved from a brief document. Nothing is experimental. No matter what you design(even personal projects) it must consists of a brief about what your audience needs, it will help to come up with better design solutions.

Check out my works below! I did during my Internship.

How you can apply

⚠️I shared it from my experience, it might be different for you so always put your thoughts/decisions before applying.

Keep searching for the job roles you are looking for. Don’t limit yourself to just LinkedIn or one platform. Use every social media possible.

Before applying for a role, always make sure your portfolio is up to date and matches the job role. if you are applying for 3D make sure, 3D works must empathize on your portfolio (website, blog, or any platform).

Also add your secondary skills, like if your primary area is in 3D, try adding few projects of 2D, traditional works, rough sketches, make sure all of them has sufficient context to explain what it’s about. It gives a bit of side understanding of how you work and think.

Things you need to know

CTC

Cost to Company is not the money you will get in hand, instead, it’s telling you worth for that company for the specif role you are applying for. For example, if your CTC is Rs. 10,000, then there will be some TDS(tax deduction at source). So always ask about what you will be getting in hand.

working hours

Make sure you know your working hours, the reason it’s important is that now everyone is working remotely (at the time of writing this article). It will help to manage your time for others works too.

always be aware of your team

You will be part of your team, so it’s important to know what task your team members are, even though it’s not related to work.

Don’t be afraid to speak up your mind, when it comes to decision

Don’t hesitate if you are having any problems, I at the beginning of my internship I didn’t ask about the problems I was facing, because of “what will they say”. They will help you, so always ask for the things you want, before it’s too late, or you bring any trouble.

All the best!

Thanks for reading so far.

How was your Internship experience, please share it on the comments! I’d love hear them.
